![]() ![]() Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I would vote for General von Lettow-Vorbeck. He managed to end the war undefeated after tying up British forces for years in German East Africa. |

I voted Pizarro, Cortes and Guderian. I always held the conquistadors in a very high regard since they were true adventurers who conquered a whole continent by othing but their greed and brass balls.

Besides, Michael Collins was hardly the first to use guerilla warfare tactics. Such tactics were being used by Viriato against the Romans during the Purinos Polemos two millennia before Michael Collins.

Btw, wasn't Viriato from the Spanish part of Lusitania, current Salamanca? j/k

Just kidding. Honestly, it would make no difference to me where Viriato was from. He was Iberian - a Spaniard - and that's all that matters. |

01. Alexander the Great.
02. Napoleon. 03. Julius Caesar. Within the Spanish, I believe that as a general, no doubt that: - Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (El Gran Capitán). As it´s considered to be the "inventor" of the unbeatable TERCIOS. As heros, NO doubt that: - D. Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta. - D. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (EL CID). As the most audicious adventurers: - Hernán Cortés. - Francisco Pizarro. |

There is a commented version of The Prince (Maquiavelo), by Napoleon. He constantly refers to himself as an Italian. On the other hand, No doubt, he served the "Grandour" of France. |

The greatest were, in a chronological order, C. Julius Caesar and Napoléon Bonaparte of course.

Here's another greatest military leaders list for comparison:
Greatest Military Leaders It surprised me to see so few "Frederickists" among us...

How about putting Spartacus on the list? Granted, he didn't have a regular army.
Also I would rephrase the question to: Who were the great European military thinkers (e.g., Clausewitz, Guderian, etc.)? |
|
|||
|
Why is there Charles Martel for example on the list, who stopped a small and weak muslim army near an unimortant city, but there isn't Sobieski of Poland or Tervel of Bulgaria, who both stopped much larger muslim armies besieging two major european capitals - Vienna and Constantinople? Is this thread about europeans or just wester-europeans?

In Spain, the Conquistadores Cortés and Pizarro conquered, with very few troops, in a new and unknown world and with supreme cunning, the 2 most powerfull empires of the whole America, but in my first impression, 2 names sound in my head clamming his place in this list:
El Gran Capitán, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba: Don Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta: ![]() Blas is the one who is kneeling and giving his sword, defeated (he lacked of 1 eye, 1 leg and 1 arm lost in battles, not showed in the figure due to obvious and low reasons), to the english Vernon, in this coin that, without any doubt, represents the most grave and deep shame to a whole culture in history, since was Vernon who fled from Cartagena de Indias in the worst naval defeat in the history on this planet. Of course, the coins were already forged and moving, previous to battle, to celebrate the obvious victory over Las Españas in a coward and unfair attack from the Anglosaxon fleet, and sent to Spain to insult the Spaniards with a clear victory that never happened. And, of course (we are talking about anglosaxons -reminder-), this episode was and still is silenced in Anglosaxon surrealistic stories that some ignorants call "History". Pathetic. ![]() My vote would be for Blas. Honores a Blas, Hernán, Pizarro, Gonzalo y tantos otros olvidados, anónimos la mayoría. Mis respetos.
