An Austrian politician has caused controversy by questioning the existence of the Nazi gas chambers.

John Gudenus of the far-right Freedom Party called into doubt the evidence for gas chambers when questioned about their existence on Austrian television.

Wolfgang Schüssel only wears a black suit like the man in black. He is the silent Kanzler of Austria. He does nothing what the party ÖVP wants him to do. He speak nothing what the party wants to speak and so on...

Well, because of getting himself involved in Holocaust issues, life turned out to be harder for this man. Gudenus was asked to resign from the Party by the Social Democrats and Greens. The Party's general secretary found his comments out of line as well. The new Party leader himself pressurised him to leave. As you can see, it all comes down to the image of the Party. Now they want him out of the Bundesrat as well. Wolfgang Schüssel believes that individuals who deny or doubt the happening of the Holocaust and the sufference of Jews have no place in a democratic political body.

Austria is currently celebrating the 60th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Nazi Germany in April 1945.

Ex-Austrian MP faces trial under anti-Nazi laws

VIENNA - Former member of parliament John Gudenus will go on trial under Austria's anti-Nazi laws, legal sources said yesterday.

Gudenus, a 64-year-old retired army officer, would probably appear before court next spring following his remark that "there were gas chambers, but not in the (Nazi) Third Reich, only in Poland".
