Default the name olea

first of all, I am not sure where to put this thread, but if someone knows of a more appropiate sub-forum, go ahead.

now, I have a not too distant relative of the name olea, which I suspect may be able to give me a hint about her background. for several reasons, I cannot obtain much information on this woman. she is from my scandinavian side, but I have never before heard of a scandinavian with that name. I've been looking around on the internet, and, oliveplants aside, I have found spanish, basque and russian oleas. could anyone provide some info on this name? thank you in advance.

thank you.

judging from a few pictures that I have found, she certainly doesn't look norwegian. southern european, rather, but I have nothing else than these pictures to support this theory, and I may be far-fetched, but I first thought of greece when I saw her. see, this is how confused and mad I'm getting from staring at some old photographs.

The weapon of Ullensaker Kommune

Olea is the female form of Ole, which again is a modernized verzion of Olav, of Olafr. We have had plenty kings named Olav, the name is about holy here.

I also as a boyscout received some personal laud from our latest king Olav, Olav V, for constructing a primitive gate that closed itself. The king honored me by opening the gate personal. Of course I am still proud of that.

Olavr may come from the old god Ullr, which is a god of hunting, skiing, winter and arching. The Uller cult is older than the Odin cult, that appears later, when people starts farming in northern Scandinavia. The ol`one.

Uller has been worshipped all over Norway, and very much in Sweden. Ullmann? There are many places named after Uller, both in north and in south.
Ullevoll, Ullevi, Ullern, Ulefjell, Ullsfjord, Ula, the list may be looong. Ulla is a Swedish female form.

At some pictures, Uller is equipped with skies, or skates, another Saami invention. Originally the Sami used a bone as skate edge, I believe the best bones for skates was of the thightbones from seals, but I may be wrongCould be from reindeer.

Esoteric Uller also represents the principe of swift movement, a strong nescessety for hunters.

Default Re: the name olea

For what I have found, "olea" is a Basque word meaning "forge" or "smithy", there is also a Castilian legend which says that the origin of the Spanish flag is debt to a knight named Olea, that during a battle which was about to be lost, embraced the flag of Castile to avoid its capture by the enemy, giving birth with his blood to the red stripes of the current flag of Spain, a legend that resembles to the one of the Aragonese flag, but being the latter much younger.

Curiously, there are much more sources speaking about Olea as a surname than properly a name, so in case you are interested, here it comes one of these definitions plus a Coat of Arms (the Riojan one):

Quote:
Olea

It's generally considered of Riojan (Castilian) origin, although it also had noble houses in Biscay and it seems that there was also a branch in the province of Palencia, which seems to indicate that there existed various procedences and also explains the fact that there exist many different blazons. In the Room of Hijosdalgo of the Real Chancillería of Valladolid, numerous cavaliers of this lineage did the debt "probanzas" of nobility and cleaning of blood. They did it too in front of the General Meetings of the Lordship of Biscay and the Corregidor of Bilbao.

Also, in the above mentioned province of Palencia, there's a little village named Olea de Boedo, maybe founded by one of these branches, and which is just another one in the large list of Basque toponyms of Castile.

Edit: Uhm, now I have found something that would explain why being an Olea was once synonymous of bravery:

Quote:
Olea, Cristoval - Saved the life of Cortes at Xochimilco, rescuing him as he was being dragged from his horse "El Romo" by the Mexica (Aztecs). Died as a result.
