Le coucou parasite les nids des autres espèces. La femelle dépose ses oeufs dans les nids des autres oiseaux. Elle les dépose quand les autres commencent à pondre les leurs, mais avant le début de l'incubation. Dès que le nid est libre, elle enlève un oeuf et dépose le sien parmi ceux de l'hôte. Elle peut pondre de 8 à 25 oeufs par saison dans différents nids. Après la naissance, le jeune coucou fait rouler les autres oeufs hors du nid. Il les pousse avec son dos jusqu'au bord, et les fait passer par-dessus. Il peut aussi, de la même façon, pousser les jeunes oiseaux.
