Arabicosity? Hum. How do you read the handwriting? It seems so hard.

Which could mean two things.
Either this man in your hotel had only seen European-looking Lebanese through his career (seems unlikely) or... well, you got my point I guess.

Just kidding of course.

When I was on Canary Islands, many Canarians tried to speak Spanish with me, but many thought that I'm Englishman. That's strange because I don't look like Spaniard or Englishman, having medium pigmentation, medium brown hair and brown eyes.

Seriously there are many Lebanese (coming from Lebanon, they are here just to study) in my faculty and they all look like Samir Geagea :

Still they look different to Arabs and Moors. Probably something of their own.. Phoenicians as Salaün said? More pictures of Geagea.

Speaking of Lebanese and foreign restaurants, I remember a Lebanese pastisserie near Marble Arch in London where they had pastries very similar to the Turkish and Greeks baklavas made of pistacchio, almonds and honey. Very nice.

Grr! That wasn't a Lebanese patisserie - that's my family business!

The Arabs manage easily enough, and so could I once I'd got used to it, unless it was in that ornate calligraphic style they use now and then.

Lebanese like to think they have nothing in common with Arabs. They also don't appreciate to be mistaken for Arabs. Oop, I think sorry you look so typical for a Norwegian.

I avoid Lebanese restaurants, most of them are runned by Muslims. Better a notorious Muslim shop than a fake Christian one. I've to say their food is rather good, way better than Maghrebian's, not my favorite but still good.

They are all Semitic peoples. Lebanese probably Phoenicians, Jews, Arabs and other Middle East peoples. Whatever Semitic means in terms of genetics and anthro.. Orientalid? I think that it is wrong to mistake them as Arabs. It reminds me a bit of the anthro-simplified mindset in Spain, which divides the world basically like this:
  • Chinos: anyone with slanted eyes, little or much; even one of the Moroccan Moro detained with relation to the bomb attack in Madrid on March 11, 2004, was nicknamed El Chino
  • Moros: anyone wearing a towel or a fez on the head (yes, including those in the Bosnian SS Division), being of Muslim religion (even if he is a Chino or a racial European), or dressing with a funny stripped gown with sandals
  • Indios: native americans or part native americans; India's natives can be mistaken for Moros, especially if the head is wrapped up with a towel; anyone acting or dressing funny
  • Gitanos: all of them, but it could be an Anglo-Saxon Australian walking on his bare feet or an American White Trash with children with running noses
  • Guiris: they used to be the source income for Gitanos; aka Tourists; roughly equivalent to Gringos; they wear sandals like the Moros, but unlike the Moros they wear them with socks
  • Gabachos: you know those ones.. they have a serious problem to roll the /r/ and come with big supplies of a liquid which they call eau (and they pronounce like /o:/ or something), and which looks suspiciously like water; the worse Gabachos are those assimilated having Spanish surnames and communist ancestry

I noticed that too of Lebanese. Even if they are Muslim they are likely to let you think that they are Christian refugees, for the sake of making a few euros. Little wonder that one can say "worse (tighter) than a Jew, a Phoenician".

Well, at first sight, one cannot be too sure. After a few polite words exchanged, yes it is. They are Christians -a few Arabs are as well, what about them? I guess it is the main difference. And the looks, they are lighter. Other than that they both speak a semitic language, they live in the ME. Their concerns are not ours -at least mine.

A revelation: the American mindset coming from Spain.

Oh yeah. "The worse Gabachos are those assimilated having Spanish surnames and communist ancestry" I do concur.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm not implying anything about concerns.

You back stabber!

It actually works the way round. We simplify in tems of "them", whereas Americans simplify in terms of "us" (white).

It wouldn't be honest not to admit it.

The last strong argument that I had with one Gabacha, it didn't take me long to figure that she was part Spanish Republican. Should be deported to Oïl lands!

Gabacha? Are someone's political views genetically related? I think I wouldn't mind her in my kitchen at least.

In Spain, they are to some extent. It's very racial in a way.

For example, Falangists used to sing a changed version of the Carlist anthem, Oriamendi, as a mockery:

original version

For God, for Motherland and for King
Fought our parents
For God, for Motherland and for King
We shall fight too

We shall fight all together
All together in a union
Defending the flag
Of the Holy Tradition

---

Falangist version

[...]

If your father threw himself out
Straight from a balcony
You would throw yourself too
Only to follow "Tradition"

The most common answer from a Carlist to the question why he was one was: because my father, my grandfather, etc., were too.

The funny thing is that this is, at different levels, true in many Socialists, Communists, Conservatives, etc.

No, you wouldn't. She was my blind date that night, but as usual with anything female French, my idea of a flirt is to create a polemical situation. Fortunately (for her) there was a Dutch friend with us willing to put a happy ending to the night.
