Very tasty, but most people make their own, which is often nicer than the stuff you can get from street traders.

It's not originally Russian, but comes from the Caucasus. In the old days, I suppose meat wasn't that easy to come by, and the Orthodox calendar of regular fasting played a role.

Shashlyk's okay to eat from traders, as you can usually see them cook it in front of you, and select the raw meat yourself. If you want something more risky, and aren't too aaverse to the sort of immigrant food with decidedly high feline and canine content, however, try the suspicious Shaurma [or Shaverma in some places] - near enough a Donner Kebab. I avoid it like the plague, but after a few... Well, you know what it's like!
Yep, it seems "shashlyk" is the correct word:

Shashlyk

That's because American food is shit.

Canadian food ftw!

Well, not particularly. But it’s a kind of traditional food for picnics here (new urban traditions).

I've never actually found any Kebab Shops in the UK which sell shwarmas. My friends and I used to eat them all the time when we lived in the Middle East, naive as we were. They tasted good though. I noticed that they sell a similar sort of food in Crete called "gyros", which basically consists doner chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, french fries, and pickles... which are then smeared in mayonnaise and wrapped in pita bread. Perfect as a meal before you hit those crazy Greek trance clubs.

Ekh! Isn't there a food thread on the forum that prompts some more healthy cravings? All we've done so far is make me ravenous for unidentifiable chunks of gristle and minced offal! Not to mention tempting me away from my Principles!

Actually - the best kebab I ever had in Britain was prepared in a fully English shop, so no pangs for the conscience there! - Bimbi's up in Durham Town. Proper big fat Geordie lasses with huge forearms make em, and they're gorgeous! [the kebabs, that is - but the ladies are also a sight for sore eyes, when you're sick and tired of scrawny stick thin waif girls ]

Maple syrup, moose, deer (pretty much anything you can hunt here...), poutine (disgustingly unhealthy as it is, sometimes I feel like it.), tourtiere (most amazing meat pie ever) umm..

Maple syrup is amazing and you know it.

I usually don't. I just eat at cheap places where there's good food, nothing exotic, and they happen to be all Spanish places. I like Spanish food.

Spanish food isn't very common here.

That's exquisit. You must try Galician food, it's not very ellaborated, but the "raw material" is insurpasable.

I ate mc donalds yesterday, it made me kind of sick. I eat there every few months. I think the thing with me is that my grandfather had a rough up-bringing and he told me that during times of war..one has to eat whatever one can find. So I guess I grew with that mentality that food is food and if there is a war I have to be ready to survive.
