Post Spanish women live the longest in Europe

Spanish women live the longest in Europe

19 April 2006

MADRID — Spanish women have the longest life expectancy among European Union countries - on average living to 83.

But despite their longevity, a report by the Spanish ministry of health found more women were dying from smoking-related diseases.

Between 1992 and 2002, lung cancer and other related illnesses claimed the lives of 31 percent more women.

Smoking remained the principle cause of death in Spain, despite a steady fall in the number of smokers.

At present 28 percent of the population admit to the habit.

For Spaniards as a whole, life expectancy was 79.

This put them in third place in the EU, after Italy and Sweden.

The report said: "The health of Spaniards is globally good and carries on improving."

It said better medical care appeared to be the main reason Spaniards were living longer.

It did not make mention of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

The most healthy parts of the country to live are Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Navarre and Madrid, where people lived on average past 80.

The worst parts of Spain for one's health were Ceuta (78), Melilla (78) and Andalusia (78.4).

The report highlighted that in 1960, Spaniards lived to 69 on average.

I believe the women of the small country Andorra live longer at 86.62 years (2007 est.).
The life expectancy of some of the Negroid nations is in the lower 30s.
