Drink More to Smoke Less

A German company -- in an ultimate act of retro defiance -- has announced its plans to produce nicotine-laced beer. Bars and restaurants may soon see decreasing levels of nervous finger-tapping and panicky lip-biting.

Not a bad idea, perhaps the anti-smoking campaign has been funded by the breweries so that they can satisfy nicotine cravings with their own addictive products instead

I can't imagine how they will get the quantities of nicotine right, though.
If you make it concentrated enough so that someone drinking 1 or 2 pints will get a buzz from it, how do you prevent the binge drinker from overdosing (considering that nicotine is extremely poisonous)?

The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth.
For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish.

The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation.

Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation.

Default AW: Drink More to Smoke Less

Well, the same article says a beer will contain 3 miligrams of nicotine/bottle.
Quote:
A German beer producer, Nautilus, has announced that it is currently testing NicoShot, a beer containing 6.3 percent alcohol and three milligrams of nicotine per bottle.

[...]

Smokers all over the world will be grateful. But isn't nicotine addictive? Won't stuffing nicotine down the beer drinkers' throats simply encourage a new generation of smokers to trade yellow teeth for beer bellies and bad hangovers?

The German company would beg to differ. In fact, it is hoping that NicoShot will help people smoke less.

"While NicoShot can lessen cravings, it is not a 'cure' for smoking," the Nautilus spokesperson said. "But it can help you make changes in your lifestyle without having to walk out of the bar for a quick smoke to deal with sudden withdrawal symptoms."
6.3 percent alcohol is a bit over what the average beer contains. I don't know how much 3 mg of nicotime is. Perhaps someone knows how much there is in a cigarette?

The thing is that alcohol dampens the body's sensitivity to nicotine, thus smokers tend to smoke more when they are drinking.

More of this beer = greater desire for nicotine = greater desire for this beer.

Seems like the brewery can't lose from this scheme.
