I think these are rather extreme comparisons. Europeans have also been historically addicted to potatoes, a South American plant, when sailing. That has never damaged us, even though the plant is not European in origin. There might even be some European plants with caffeine in them, like tomatoes and potatoes have a small amount of nicotine in them.

I blame my recent fondness for home-made Espresso which has seen my caffeine tolerance shoot through the roof

I enjoy the taste of coffee but I tend to avoid drinking it very often. Only when I face a deadline or exam to revise for. When I drink it usually it's espresso. However, these days it seems to have some strange effects on me (jitters, insomnia, anxiety).

Yes, that sounds very consistent with you not drinking it very often. So your tolerance is low, and you get the average effects of mild caffeinism.
