Default Good detailed map of the Volga peoples

I wonder if this is of any use to anyone interested in matters Finnic? I've been looking for such a map for ages, and was delighted to find it in Narody Povolzh'ya i Priural'ya, Narody i Kul'tury (Peoples of the Volga and Urals, from the series Peoples and Cultures), published by Nauka, Moskva 2000, by N.F.Mokshin, T.P.Fedyanovich, L.S.Khristolyubova, which I immediately bought, despite the extortionate price of 1600 rubles. So why not share my joy with you all?

I coloured it in, as the original was a bit hard to read, and I suppose it's broadly accurate though I may have made a few mistakes due to the occasional ambiguity in the original. The beige areas are of course settled by Russians and Ukrainians. There's a few Mennonites and other Germans too, scattered around.

It's not just Finnic peoples that are noted here, but also some Turkic.

I know! But the Finnic distribution can't be understood without some showing of the Turkic settlement. The book as a whole doesn't concern itself with Tatars, Bashkirs or Chuvash - they're in a separate volume which I haven't found yet.

There is of course a large Mordva/Mari component in the Chuvash, and the Tatars have very many non-Turkic elements. There's an Ugric dimension as well, of course... Fascinating area.

Yes, the area is the point of contact between the Turkics and the Ugro-Finnics.

This map shows the approximate lands of the former Volzhka Bulgaria
There are lots of data that the people in these areas considered themselves as Bulgarians in the pre-communistic times. But in Stalin's times the national feelings were oppresed and due to his "autonomous republics", the modern Chuvashes and Kazan Tatars descended from the Volga Bulgars. May be these processes have started earlier but Stalin's politics accelerated them.
