Cocaine on 94 percent of Spanish banknotes




MADRID, Dec 24 (Reuters Life!) - Traces of cocaine can be found on 94 percent of banknotes in Spain, a country that has one of the world's highest rates of users, according to a study published on Sunday.
The 100 notes tested were collected in gyms, supermarkets and pharmacies across Spain, where increased affluence and falling street prices have made the drug more and more accessible.
Cocaine now sells for as little as 60 euros ($80) a gram, or 5 euros ($7) a line, and it is regularly used by 1.6 percent of Spaniards, up from 0.9 percent in 1999, a government report said this month.
Law enforcement agencies say cocaine is getting cheaper and more popular in Europe because of efforts to boost production by Colombian paramilitaries and rebels who need money for weapons. Spain is a major entry point to Europe for the smugglers.

It was not clear how many of the notes had been used to snort cocaine and how many had picked up traces from other bills, according to the study by the Sailab laboratory, published in the daily El Mundo.

I wouldn't say that 60 euros a gram is little. The amount of cocaine found in every gram sold on the street is minimal. It is so adulterated that most of the composition are amphetaminics, lidocaine, quinine and other substances.

This is not to say that if cocaine was distributed in a pure form it would be harmless. You just have to see the mind and physical state of the Peru Indians who chew the coca leaves.

By "pure" form you mean as the plant? I think they used to use it in Coca Cola (hence the "coca"?) Maybe this is an urban myth though..

I think that urban myth is accurate. I know many products can be made out of cocaine. Recently, Bolivian president Evo Morales announced that he would boost up the use of Coca leafs in his country to be used for creating many items such as soap and shampoo I believe.

Susi, no. If I had refered to the plant as the pure form I would have said the coca leaf.

The elaboration of cocaine in origin from the coca leaves involves the use of various chemicals: sulfuric acid, quicklime, carbide, acetone, toluene and kerosene.

And I believe that the use of coca in the coca cola is a urban myth.

Evo Morales was a cocalero, and it seems that his idea of an economy is reduced to his past experience as a cocalero and little more. If the coca leaf has any property that makes it worth it as an ingredient for such or such product, it is something that I wouldn't trust on his saying.

The first ingredients originally used in Coca Cola: Coca leaf and Cola nuts. Coca leaf is used no more.

Coca leaves are used for all kinds of things. My friend's brother worked in Columbia for a while and came back telling of coca toothpaste, coca soap, etc.

That's really quite frightening...

To tell you the truth this piece of news is of no surprise to me, Spain has become a dump lately especially Madrid, you only have to look at the streets to realise the pathetic situation.
The drugs problem all ready existed but Immigration has helped to make it even worse as you can see in the next video.
