Survey on future of Belgium
14 December 2006
BRUSSELS - A poll for the Belgian TV station, RTBF, shows that 58 percent of Belgians interviewed think that the Belgium of tomorrow will not be much different to the way the country looks today.
According to the survey, 27 percent think more independence for the regions is likely while some 15 percent believe that eventually Belgium will cease to exist.
Half of these 15 percent said they believe that the country's separation will take place within 15 to 20 years.
In the event of a break-up of the country, 36 percent of Walloons think that the region of Brussels Capitale will be attached to Wallonia and that this entity will be independent. Meanwhile, 37 percent of Brussels people say they are in favour of a Brussels region "going it alone", believing it should have the status of a "European quarter."
The survey was conducted for the RTBF programme, "Questions a la une", which was broadcast last night. (Wed)
