Traditional gender roles still exist in Flanders

Tue 28/06/2005 - Brussels University (VUB) published a study today which highlights the differences that still exist between how men and women spend their free time. The study questioned 1,500 Flemings on how they spend their leisure time.

More women work part time

Despite more and more women being in employment many of them choose to work part time. Men on the other hand still mainly work full time. Less and less men are working more and more hours whereas the opposite can be said of women, the study maintains.

Easier social contact in the digital age
Its' often said that the speed of modern living leaves us with little time to socialise. The study however reveals some surprising facts.

The number of times those questioned came into contact with others during their free time has actually increased during the last 5 years.

This is particularly true of men and can be attributed to electronic communication forms such as email and chartrooms.
