Twins with different skin colour born in Germany

Berlin - Twin boys of radically differing skin colour have been born in a one-in-a-million chance to a German father and Ghanaian mother in a Berlin hospital, doctors at the clinic have announced. The twins, born by Caesarean section, came into the world on July 11. But details were kept from the public until the press were invited to the clinic to see the delighted parents - Florence, 35, and the father Stephan, 40, and photograph them with their twin boys.

Hospital authorities said the non-identical, or biovular, twins were definitely full brothers, with the same father. The probability of a birth of this kind was one in a million.

"Ryan came first, and everything was as usual. But when Leo was born, I couldn't believe my eyes," Birgit Weber, the doctor who carried out the Caesarean said.

Weber said she had been present at 10,000 births over almost 20 years of hospital experience and had never seen anything quite like this.

Ryan, who weighed 2.650 kilograms, is distinctly lighter in skin colour than Leo, who was born weighing 2.606 kilograms.

Doctors at the clinic in the east of Berlin said a similar case had been recorded in Middlesborough in England last year. There is also reported to be a case in the eastern German city of Leipzig.

Florence, who has an 18-year-old son from a previous relationship, expressed delight with her boys.

"Ryan is the noisy one, and Leo quiet," she said.

The sight of her very different sons had initially left her speechless, she said.

The parents met each other at a party 10 years ago, when Florence was living in the Netherlands. She subsequently moved to Potsdam near Berlin, where Stephan works as a rock musician.

On the Swedish online news The Local the article starts reading that a "Berlin couple got an interesting surprise this week when the woman gave birth to twins with very different skin tones."

I am surprised that they were surprised at all. I don't know where is the surprise. If the twins had been one green and the other orange, then that might have been a surprise.

A German mother and father were sentenced on Wednesday for murdering their 5-year-old daughter Lea-Sophie by starvation.



The Schwerin district court handed both the 24-year-old mother and the 26-year-old father prison time of 11 years and 9 months for child abuse and murder.

"Both of the accused stood by and did nothing while their own flesh and blood wasted away in misery," head judge Robert Piepel said when the verdict was announced. The parents denied their daughter help "that would have been so easy to get," he said.

On November 20, 2007, Lea-Sophie died of dehydration and starvation, having refused food for weeks after her younger brother was born. She weighed just 7.4 kilogrammes (16.3 pounds) - less than half her normal weight - when she died. She was rushed to the hospital with severe deficiency symptoms and bed sores, but died shortly thereafter. An autopsy showed that she died of starvation, dehydration and painful ulcers.

"It should never have gone that far," the mother told the court in the German state of Mecklenberg Western-Pomerania.

During the trial, psychiatric experts said they had discovered clues of personality disorders in both parents, who said didn't seek medical care for their daughter in fear that child services would take her away. The mother also admitted that she had felt ashamed that she struggled to care for her family and household. During the trial it was revealed that the father often used video games to escape his troubles. The family became increasingly isolated as Lea-Sophie's health deteriorated, the court found.

Despite the fact that the family had been reported to child services on numerous occasions, the city faces no charges in Lea-Sophie's death, the court said.

The surprise consists, I guess, in a very high improbability of having two twins of so different skin colour, born out of racially very different parents, instead of (the twins) being something in between, like mulattoes. That genes get combined in that way is a rarity of sorts.

Had the parents been close or relatively close to each other, that might have been a bit of a surprise. But the genetic distances between a Negrid female and a Europid male are too long to consider the outcome a surprise.

In the case of the father I would suggest a genetic test, because the darker version is even more improbable in such mixture cases.

The lighter is unusual too though, because that light and more Europoid traits, as far as one can determine at that age, seem to be usually more likely only if the colored parent is mixed already.

So indeed, its a quite exceptional case especially if the second child is from the same father, what seems to be the case.

I saw the babies on a local TV news bulletin about the time I made the post - and the babies did look full Negroid etc -IMO

Let us see if the press manage to get hold of some photos in a few months time - parents trying to sell their story.

I for one never did. I think the problems of Europe go way deeper than that. Deep into the soul of all of us..what it is, I don't really know but it is something that has been in my mind for some time.

I've even read the "white" one was "blond", certainly an attempt to emphasize the "improbability" of this case. I find him neither super blond, nor "white".
