Spanish PM backs French plan for 'Mediterranean Union
MADRID, May 31, 2007 (AFP) - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Thursday that he backed a French proposal to set up a "Mediterranean Union" comprising nations from its northern and southern flank. "The reception (to the idea) was very favourable on my part," he told a joint news conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Madrid. "We are ready to cast our gaze towards the Mediterranean for cooperation, security and problems related to immigration," he added. Sarkozy, who took office earlier this month, has proposed the creation of the loose grouping of African and European Mediterranean countries. He has suggested that Turkey could play a key role in the new body instead of joining the European Union, an idea that has been rejected by Ankara. "We must do to the Mediterranean what the Europeans did 60 years ago with Europe," Sarkozy said in Madrid. Eight European Mediterranean countries will meet soon to prepare a proposal to African Mediterranean countries, he added. The eight countries which are expected take part in the meeting are Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Slovenia. Separately in Lisbon, Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado also expressed support for the initiative. "We have not yet had the opportunity to discuss the content of this initiative but we feel it is very opportune," he told the Lusa news agency. source: Spanish PM backs French plan for \'Mediterranean Union\', French News, France, Expatica

The article is pretty hazy: will it be a political union (so what would be of the euroepan union) or just an economic and strategic partnership? Even the latter option is a likely prelude to political unification (a longstanding goal of the freemasons and merchants ruling us).

Zapatero is a loser. He accused the previous government of having taken Spain away from Europe and close to America. He said that with him "Spain was returning to Europe", where Spain had been isolated by Aznar's Atlantist support. So he annoyed the Americans and when he wanted to come in the big picture in the EU, Chirac turned his back on him. Clearly Berlusconi did too. The loss of Schroedder was a blow to him. And his Socialist colleague Blair did not care one bit.
Then he has put a lot of personal effort in his "Alliance of Civilizations", for which he can't find an international leader to head it nor a reasonable country to support it. In the French elections, he made a loud support for Segolene Royale and against Sarkozy. She was his only chance that someone took him seriously. These last weeks he has taken his pants down twice. First with Sarkozy (whatever Sarkozy had proposed to him, he would have accepted). Then with Congoleeza Rice. A pathetic loser and a clown.
