Hellenic Nationalist Perspective
Karamanlis, Varvitsiotis Expose the True Character of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis, President of New DemocracyIf there's ever been a time (and there's been plenty) to prove that New Democracy was "right-wing" only in name then that time has definitely come. While in the past ND has tried to play off a "conservative" or "right-wing" image in order to garner electoral support from the non-leftist sector of Greek voters now, with the steady erosion of traditional values, such pretenses are hardly needed. In fact some – and certainly Kostas Karamanlis – would even say that espousing such beliefs could be damaging to one's political career! And so the president of New Democracy told us in no uncertain terms (and in the Financial Times, no less) what we had already long since known: that "ND is clearly not a right-wing party." Although Karamanlis went on, adding that it was a "center-right" party (whatever that means!), "opportunistic", at least in our opinion, would have been the better description to use. Miltiades VarvitsiotisBut if the words of Karamanlis were revealing about the nature of New Democracy then they were nothing compared to what Miltiades Varvitsiotis, a ND member of parliament, had to say concerning the moronic youths who annually burn our sacred Hellenic flag every 17 November in the Polytechnio as a demonstration for "democracy" and "freedom." Instead of denouncing the defilement of our national flag, that symbol that represents everything that our ancestors fought and died for, this man had the insolence to shamlessly declare that it was "an unalienable right for anyone to burn the flag" and that we must "champion this right even if we happen to disagree"! New Democracy, in perfect harmony with its new "center-right" ideological principles, did not even condemn Varvitsiotis' outrageous remarks. Instead they simply stated that they "reflected his own personal opinions."

By the same token as he considers freedom burning the flag of one's country, it would be freedom to kick him in the arse. Surely he would argue that kicking him in the arse it not freedom because it attempts against his physical integrity. But, doesn't burn the flag attempt against the emotional integrity of many of his fellow countrymen? If we start relativizing on things that are a matter of respect, who is going to tell where the limit to relativizing should be?
