Mass clashes between Russians and ethnic immigrants in Stavropol

In the evening on February 13 a homicide attempt on Ivan Hanin (36) was committed. He is known as the ataman (chieftain) of the Nizhnekuban Cossack community of the Terek Cossack forces. An unidentified person shot the victim after he had left the building of the local Culture House. The shooting was presumably done from a Makarov pistol. Three bullets hit Hanin in the head. He is alive but his condition is reported to be critical. He was hospitalized in the reanimation department of the Novoaleksandrovsk hospital.
On Wednesday the chieftain of the Izobilnoye branch of the Stavropol Terek Cossack community,Vassily Shaternikov, reported that Ivan Hanin was shot at 20:30-20:40, Moscow time, in his own car. According to Shaternikov’s words, there were witnesses who observed the unidentified person stopping at the victim’s vehicle and starting a conversation with him. In a few minutes Hanin was found mortally wounded inside the vehicle. ‘We reckon that we must defend our Cossacks,’ said Shaternikov, ‘ the chieftain Ivan Hanin is a just and honest man’.
The victim was taken to the Novoaleksandrovsk central hospital in an extremely grave condition, X-ray radiography revealed three bullets in his head. As reported by the medical officials, a long-term operation was performed in the nighttime. It was also reported that Hanin’s condition remains serious and it is not yet the time for any forecast.
February 14
A series of mass clashes between the Russian and Cossack residents of Novoaleksandrovsk on one side and Armenian and Georgian immigrants on the other took place in the town. In the heat of the conflict chieftain Andrei Hanin was thrice shot point-blank, he was urgently operated in the hospital and his condition is also bad.
People in camouflaged uniform evacuated one of the leaders of the local Georgian community, Timur with his family from town.
Many wounded residents along with the immigrants have been hospitalized in the town hospital. Militia forces cordoned off the place.
Cossacks flooded the town from all over the Stavropol region as well as Krasnodar and Rostov. The residents and Cossacks held a rally in town. They demanded a dismissal of the district authorities, eviction of the immigrants and strict measures against the ethnic crime.
The local council deputies held special seating at which they decided to support the Terek Cossacks’ demands.
Aleksandra Levashkova, the Stavropol Terek Cossack press secretary, reported that Novoaleksandrovsk council deputies expressed their intention to support all of the demands. They include a dismissal of local authority Nikolai Gerasimov, head of the district. Also she noted that the rally had ended but the Cossack representatives were still remaining in the Novoaleksandrovsk central square.
Novoaleksandrovsk attorney office has started investigating the case. The Russian Criminal Code qualifies it as “attempted murder”, art. 30, part 3 and art. 105, part 1. The Stavropol district attorney took the investigation under personal control. The case was taken over for investigation by special investigator of the Stavropol prosecutor office criminal department. As the public prosecutor office authorities report, the investigation is establishing the circumstances of the crime and the felon.
The federal security service of the Russian Federation is undertaking measures against the spread of information about the events in Novoaleksandrovsk. The main Internet resources belonging to the Russian nationalists (7 information resources of the DPNI movement and all of its forums) as well as a number of the local sites are switched off. Stavropol residents are moving in the direction of Novoaleksandrovsk. Internal army troops are being gathered from the neighboring regions and moved into the area of the town.
February 15
Collisions between the Russians and the representatives of ethnic diasporas continued by night. Public traffic in the area of Novoaleksandrovka has been reduced. Among the residents of Stavropol information about a meeting to be held on Saturday, February 17 is spread. The residents will gather at 14:00 in front of the building of municipal authorities to express their solidarity with the residents of Novoaleksandrovsk. They also plan to demand from the local authorities to put an end to ethnic criminality and flourishing corruption in the district.
On the request of the authorities the Stavropol and Vladikavkaz bishop Theophan in his statement called the residents to stop the unrest: "Whatever the ethnic or political affiliation of the killers is, just they and only they personally are guilty in this dreadful sin. There cannot be collective responsibility of the whole people for the crimes of individual gangsters.
The information of what is going on in town is very poor.
