Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor: Says Britain should be more welcoming to immigrants

Comments (65)

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales called on people to do more to welcome immigrants to Britain in his Christmas address today.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, used his Christmas Homily to highlight the needs of the excluded and the importance of Christian compassion towards the less fortunate.
He delivered his message at Westminster Cathedral, London during Midnight Mass and broadcast live on BBC Radio 4.
"The event we call Christmas, the birth of Jesus is evidently meant for everyone," he said, stressing that it was important that Christians "should seek to ensure that nothing and nobody remains untouched by the tidings of comfort and joy that came from heaven on the first Christmas night".
While acknowledging the need for immigration to be controlled, he drew particular attention to the way in which migrants were treated.

The Cardinal said: "A theme which is much in the news in Britain at the moment is the question of the many immigrant peoples who come to our country. Most immigrants come to our country because they wish to have a better life and work so as to provide for their families.
"What concerns me at the moment is our attitude as a nation to these many immigrants. Many of these people are trying, for perfectly good reasons, to enter Britain and they need to be welcomed.
"I understand that immigration needs to be controlled. However, sometimes they must feel like Joseph when he returned to Bethlehem after exile in Egypt, simply excluded because they are outsiders."

It's part of a Catholic plot to undermine the Jewnited Kingdom.
Well done

The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth.
For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish.

The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation.

Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation.

Suicide? The Anglos did that to themselves in the 17th century when they sold themselves to Jewish bankers in return for foreign military aid to help with the the forceful expulsion of their legitimate king by an effeminate Dutch dwarf.

As the Catholic clergy had been outlawed upon pain of death from the realm for many years beforehand, it had little if anything to do with Catholicism.

Perhaps Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor should stick to what he does best and stay out of immigration debates.

Agreed. The man is a cretin. Why should we be more welcoming to immigrants? Our island state is already densely packed. They take away scarce housing and job resources away from the indigenous inhabitants -- whose roots go back millennia.

I would have thought the Cardinal would be too busy working 18 hour shifts for the next few months hearing the confession of Tony Blair to comment on politics.

I think it would be difficult to come up with a list of ten prominent clergy of any denomination who have said it is right and good for a nation to restrict immigration.

How many of those who would call themselves Britons can trace their lineage back millennia?

It is an island of immigrants anyway.
