Linguistically at least they seem to have been roughly where they are now since forever. Their languages are seen to have branched off from Nostratic very early. North of the Caucasus there seem to be no traces of them ever, this having been the abode of the NWCns [Cherkess, etc.] for as long a time, and the latter have indeed spilled south of the range, creating non Georgian Abkhaziya. The main body of Anatolia has always seemingly been occupied by other different groups, especially the linguistic ancestors of present day NE Caucasian speakers [Chechens, Dagestanis, Ingush, Bats]. I believe the traditional focus of Georgia is more to the east of their country, although most differentiation is seen in the west, with Megrelians, Lazi, Adzhars, Svans spreading into neighbouring coastal regions of Turkish Armenia...

Lately one speaks very much in Vasconia on the Georgian origin of the Basques.

I leave you some links (in Spanish, I sorry for it) on the topic:

Georgians are among of one of the most beautiful peoples of the world, who have a long sense of superiority. Most Georgians are taller than average European, hazel eyed for the most case, however about thirty percent are blond and have blue eyes (Land, David). This is according to David Land, British professor of anthropology and Johann Friedrich Blumenbach wrote: Caucasian variety - I have taken the name of this variety from Mount Caucasus, both because its neighborhood, and especially its southern slope, produces the most beautiful race of men, I mean the Georgian; and because all physiological reasons converge to this, that in that region, if anywhere, it seems we ought with the greatest probability to place the autochthones (birth place) of mankind. Note, that English language uses the word Caucasian to refer the European race.
Another example would be the ancient Persian word for Georgians, which is Gurg or Gorg, a Proto-Aryan (meaning Indo-European) word, meaning Beautiful. This, in fact, can be found in English gorgeous.
As for Shalikashvili, he is 100% Georgian from Kakheti and he is proud of Georgians roots.

The Georgian ethnic group (as a single entity) is one of the oldest ethnic groups in the world. Georgians are a part of the Ibero-Caucasian peoples (იბერიელ-კავკასიელი ხალხები) and are classified in the South Caucasian family ethnically, linguistically and culturally. Georgians are an ethnic group indigenous to the Caucasus region.[
this is a brief overview i can provide u right now. i've got some corrections about some comments u made, at first malkhaz shalikashvili was 100% Georgian with no other blood and he looks like a real georgian. so before assuming smth think that it may be wrong and may offend another nation which has nothing to do with orientals. i personally have never ever met a georgian looking asian,
i have a big lectures about origin of georgians, so if u are interested just ask me politely and don't make any derogatory comments when u have never been to Georgia and seen what we really look like.

one thing I know form Greeks is that the word 'Geo' is clode to agriculture, earth, this kind of stuff, and ancient geo had agriculture highly developed. that's why Sakartvelo (in Georgian) was called Georgia.

and has nothing to do with G. Washington

I'm not sure, but I think Herodotus somewhere said, that he thinks, that Georgians, are, originally from Egypt!

What's more interesting is, that, we Serbs, call them Gruziyans, although they call themselves Karthvelians...

well, Geos being Egyptians is just a joke of the year
however, there was a time in Egypt, when they were buying slaves from all over the world and these slaves were taught to fight and protect the nation. once the revolution came to Egypt and Slaves (mostly warriors) occupied the government. when Napoleon attacket Egypt he faced some Georgian warriors there and it is believed that once upon a time, Egyptian warrior called 'mamluk' was ethnicly georgian.

what I know about Serbian language is that it's close to Russian (member of Slavic group) and russians call Geo Gruzia, so Serbians, and other slavian countries call Geo as 'Gruzya'.

'Kartlos' is believed to be the name of first georgian, so that's how the name Kartveli comes from.

There was an urban myth in old Yugoslavia that Gruzins (Georgians) were a very healthy and long-living people that can achieve the age of 110 and more. There were also several popular anegdotes about that.

As a child, I always thought that Gruzins were Russians that live in the land called Gruzia (Georgia).

actually that wasn't quite myth. Georgians were long living people. scientists relate long living with Georgian red wine called 'Khvanchkara'. you can get it in North-West mountains of Geo.

and regarding russians. one reason why Geo is having political conflict with russia nowadays is the external policy of Russia to Georgia. they started advertising that Georgian belonged them, and georgians were russians, also georgians were speaking russian and many other rubbish stuff.

in reality, Georgia and georgian language has as much to do with russia & russian language, as Serbia and China.

Regarding russian georgian conflict.
in the end of 18th century, georgia was having war against Persian empire, and Turkey. by that time russia became expansive empire with lots of lands.
Georgia and russia are both orthodox christian countries, so the Kind of Geo decided to sign a treaty with russia that would protect Georgia from Persians and Turks, while Geo would help Russia in any war they had.

however, it became soon clear that russia wanted to occupy Georgia. first they did was relocatition of Russian army souther, later they started advertising Geo belonged to them. since Russia is a big country and Geo small there was not much politicians could do.

In 1918 Georgia was officially recognized as a independent country. later in 1921 soviet army of russia again occupied Geo and it became part of soviet union. majority of georgians were against USSR, but Stalin (real name Joseb Jugashvili) became head of USSR, since he was georgian people hoped he would do something good for the country, but that was a mistake. later II warld war started and all soviet countries became involved in this was.
not officialy, 3 mln georgian man died in this war, nowaday population of Geo is 5 mln.

in 1989 Georgia officialy broked apart from Soviet Union, however Russian this was not a total break up story. the conflict continues till these days. unfortunately.

Yeah, I know...that was the opinion of Herodotus, not mine!

Here's a picture:

Three Dinarid women...first one was from Egypt - Fayum, the second is from Montenegro and the third is miss Georgia! You must say, there's some resemblance...

I like Georgians, though...they are also Orthodox Christians, and stick to old calendar like Russians and Serbs...what I don't like is pro-western and anti-Russian attitude of Sakashvilli government!
