Being Ukrainain in Moscow has become popular. Due to the Orange Revolution in contemporary Russia being Ukrainian it is becoming more fashionable. Each week in Moscow actions are taking place by human rights activists and liberals under the symbols of the Orange Revolution.

The experience of the latest events in Ukraine has given new energy to Russian oppositionists. Most Russians, who till recently wrote about Ukrainians and Ukraine almost always in an unserious manner, now are giveing more reserved opinions.

My friend Mykhailo, who works in Moscow as the boss of a brigade of Ukrainian builders, is no longer ashamed to answer his mobile phone in Ukrainian in front of his Russian workgivers.

Раніше він грав в досить дивну гру, коли українську від нього можна було почути тільки без зайвих свідків. Михайло так намагався бути схожим на москвича, що навіть копіював, часом надмірно, московську говірку.
Previously he played a weird game, where Ukrainian could only be heard from him when there were no-one present. Mykhailo tried so hard to be like a Moscovite, that he tried to copy, sometimes in excess the Moscovite accent.

Іноді це було неприємно чути. Москвичі так не розмовляють. Штучний Михайлів "московській" акцент викликав у росіян хіба що зверхні посмішки. Тепер Михайло полишив ці спроби і навіть пишається тим, що в Москві вільно розмовляє з дружиною та дитиною українською.
Sometimes this was unpleasant to listen too. Moscovites don't speak like that. The synthetic Moscovite accent was greeted by the Russians with a smile. Now Mykhailo has left this behind and is proud that he can freely speak with his wife and child in Ukrainian.


Гордість Михайла своїм українським походженням нарешті підтвердилася "помаранчевими" результатами. Раніше він лише сподівався, а тепер переконаний, що Україна невдовзі посяде гідне місце серед європейських та світових держав.
Pride in his Ukrainian background can be seen in the "Orange" results. Earlier he only hoped, an now he is certain that Ukraine will take its place amongst european and world countries.

Місяцями "нищив" свій український акцент і мій знайомий Сергій, заробітчанин з Житомирщини. Він працює в одній з приватних московських фірм, яка надала йому "Жигулі" для оперативного вирішення різних робочих питань. Головна проблема Сергія була пов'язана з московськими даїшниками.
For months my friend Serhiy, a immigrant worker from Zhytomyr "destroyed" his Ukrainian accent. He worked in one of the private Moscovite firms, which gave him a "Zhyguli" in order for him to operatively fulfil various working problems. The main problem for Serhiy were the Moscow Police.

Як тільки вони чули українське "шо" або "ге" сума штрафу одразу збільшувалася, принаймні, вдвічі. Співробітники патрульно-постової служби попри закон, який не дозволяє їм цього робити, кожний раз намагалися перевірити в Сергія так звані "реєстрацію", "міграційну картку", "дозвіл на роботу" тощо.
As soon as they heard a Ukrainian "sho" or "he" the monetary fine was made larger, at least doubled. The Police workers illegaly, each time would check Serhiy for his registration papers, his "migration card" and permit for employment. etc.

Ці обов'язки покладені на міграційну службу, але московські "менти" полюбляють використовувати незнання українцями місцевого законодавства. Це помітне джерело збільшення "ментовських" поборів. Тепер Сергій почуває себе більш впевнено, кожний раз попереджаючи міліціонерів про можливість написати офіційну скаргу до українського посольства.
This was the job of the immigration service, but the Moscovite "police" liked to use the fact that the Ukrainian did not know the local laws. Serhiy now feels himself more confident, each time warning the militiaman about the fact that he can send a complaint to the Ukrainian Embassy.

Раніше він остерігався це робити, бо абсолютно не довіряв посольським працівникам, які, так само як Леонід Кучма, не наважувалися дратувати російські власті, навіть коли мова заходила про захист своїх співвітчизників у Росії.
Previously he was reluctant to do this, because he did not have any trust in the Embassy workers, who like leonid Kuchma, did not want to harras the Russian governement services, even when it came to defend their citizens in Russia.

Я переконався на власному досвіді, чому ще донедавна заробітчани з України намагалися приховувати своє походження. Рік-півтора тому я отримав кілька ударів міліцейською палицею лише за те, що розмовляв на вулиці українською.
I have come to the conclussion, why up until recently Ukrainian workers have tried to hide their origins. A year - a year and a half ago I received a couple of blows frm the militia only for the fasct that I spoke Ukrainian on the street.

Ми з товаришем прогулювалися територією московського заповідника "Коломенське". Раптом ззаду почули вигук "Стоять!" Так кричать собакам, не людям. Ми навіть не оглянулися, бо аж ніяк не віднесли отой шум на свою адресу. Раптом я отримав шалений удар по спині й впав.
My friend and I were strolling on the territory of a Moscovite tourist spot "Kolomenske". Suddenly we heard the shout "Stop!" The manner was as if they were shouting at dogs and not people. We did not even look in the direction of the noise. Suddenly I received a bow to my back and fell down.

Коли підвівся, місцевий "мент" наніс мені ще кілька ударів гумовою дубинкою. Тільки після того "заохотився" перевірити документи. Ніяких грошей на цей раз йому не "обломилося". Ми обидва, я і товариш, були громадянами Росії, москвичами за пропискою. А от "мент" виявився земляком з Кіровограду.
When I came to my senses, the local cop gave a few more blows with his rubber truncheon. Only after that did he descide to check my documents. My friend and I are citizens of Russia, with Moscovite registration. And the cop was from Kirovohrad.

Почув українську мову й задоволено потирав руки в передчутті хабара. Ще Ленін колись писав слушну річ про те, що "найбільший російський держиморда – це зрусифікований націонал". Цей "мент" був вимушений повертатися додому. Я просто звернувся до колег з прес-служби МВС Росії й розповів про інцидент.
Once he heard the Ukrainian language spoken he wanted a bribe. Even Lenin once wrote about the fact that "the greatest Russian chauvenist is a russified national". This cop had to return home. I turned to my collegues in the press-club of the Militia Service of Russia and told them about the incident.

With the Orange revolution Ukrainian life in Russia is coming to life. Even those, who had forgotten their Ukrainian roots, begin to remember the land of their forefathers. Some have planned to change theirRussian citizenship for Ukrainian.

Ще б пак! Україна здобула непогані шанси стати в недалекому майбутньому членом НАТО та ЄС. Пенсії в Україні практично зрівнялися з російськими, а українські виплати за народження дитини не мають у Росії аналогів. Хіба стримує відсутність в Україні нових робочих місць та досі низькі зарплати.
Ukraine has a good chance in the near future to become a member of Nato or the European Union. Pensions in Ukraine are equal to Russian, and Ukrainian payments for child endowment do not have analogies in Russia. the only thing that can hold it back is the lack of new working places and the comparitively low wages.

Днями в Москві відбувся Конгрес українських громад Росії. Делегати з 80-ти регіонів РФ гордо ходили центром міста з українською символікою на грудях. Останній раз таке можна було побачити років 15 тому, коли розвалювався Союз.
Recently there will be a congress of Ukrainian communities in Russia. Delgates of the 80 regions of the Russian Federation walked through the centre of town with Ukrainian symbols ion their chasts. The last time this happened was 15 years ago, when the Soviet Union fell apart.

Чимало з російських ЗМІ весь час потому прищеплювали українцям почуття меншовартості. Не минало й дня, коли б вони не написали про московських повій походженням з України, про українських заробітчан, які нібито працюють за копійки і не дуже професійно. Проте, коли згадувались відомі в Росії вихідці з України, російська преса намагалася замовчувати їхнє походження.

Одна з моїх колег у Москві раптом зізналася, що вона українка. Навіть попросила мене навчити її української мови. Раніше вона хіба що критикувала все українське, демонструючи при цьому неприхований російський шовінізм. Коли вже вона перемінилася, то можна напевно стверджувати, що "крига скресла".
One of my colleages in Moscow suddendly said that she was a Ukrainian. She even asked to be taught the Ukrainian language. Previously she only criticised everything Ukrainian, demonstrating her unreserved Russian Chauvenism. When she changed, one can with authority say that the ice has broken.

No. Basically previously materials that were marked with various grades of Secrecy.

I met the rector Viktor Idzio of the University in Yalta at a conference this June where I did a presentation. Interesting guy. His whole team have been just digging into the various secret archives held in Moscow. One book he gave me was on the secret documents relating to UPA in Western Ukraine.

In particular yu have the documents of the NKVD agents who were ordered to pretend to be UPA soldiers and to terrorise and bring disrepute to UPA. I sent the book by mail and sghould have it soon so I post some materials from it.

Thy have been publishing heaps of materials. The unfortunate thing is that this was the first time I ahve seen them.
