AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
I recently downloaded this program and it is highly recommendable: http://www.zdnet.de/downloads/prg/4/...320142-wc.html Although I was using Norton Antivirus + Auto Protect, Spybot, Ad-aware and Zonealarm, I was able to detect 3 Trojan viruses on my HDD with this program. ![]() It is completely free-ware, including daily auto-updates and e-mail scanning. |

Great asset. I would also advise to grab ZoneAlarm Firewall by Zone Labs. It's free and works great.

I had trouble with ZoneAlarm Firewall. It wouldn't let me use the Internet, so I had to restart and edit the Internet logs. I tried uninstalling it and could not get rid of it. What was worse was the fact that my internet connection was still blocked. Then it would only let me connect for about 10-15 minutes and meanwhile I kept getting errors - from what I remember, one about vsmon.exe. I ended up formatting my harddrive because I didn't know what else to do.

Well, BitDefender is mostly an anti-virus, its firewall is not great.
The most problematic firewall for hackers is -- according to some guys i know from the Department of Electrotechnic Engineering and Computing -- BlackICE. |

Takes up the least resources (supposedly):
Kerio Personal Firewall 4: http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html |

The most effective free anti-virus tool from what I read:
AntiVir Personal Edition http://www.free-av.com/ |

However, I had to desinstall it as it created a conflict with one of the above (can't remember which one). Here is a link to AVG Anti-Virus on zdnet.com: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/AVG-A...ml?tag=lst-0-1 And here is Spybot Search & Destroy: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Spybo...ml?tag=lst-0-1 Ad-Aware SE: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Ad-Aw...ml?tag=lst-0-1 SpywareBlaster: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Spywa...ml?tag=lst-0-1 I've just installed this new program, which has detected 4 tracking cookies + 1 advertising cookie on my computer. Spyware Doctor: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Spywa...-10377263.html A warning to users of Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3: the manual update utility in the freeware version does not find the update to v1.4.

Well, I would suggest one of the many Unices available out there.
They are free, no need to worry about viruses or spyware, and they run much faster than Windows. Here are some of the more mainstream Linux distros, if you are curious. I use AVG free edition and it is very good. I took it from www.grisoft.com.

The BSD-style Unix, however, are excellent. For security the best is OpenBSD. I've used it a few years, and the one problem is software support. FreeBSD is also excellent, and while not as secure as OpenBSD, it is secure enough and its package/ports system for third parties software is unbeatable.

There is no need to buy costly antivirus programs. On the net several good free programs can be found. It would be wise to install at least two, since not one is able to detect all the viruses your pc could be infected with. My favorite combination consists of AVG / AntiVir.
AVG free edition >>>excellent<<< http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/Ing/us/tpl/v5 AntiVir Personal Edition Classic >>>excellent<<< http://www.free-av.com/ Avast Home Edition >>good<< http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html ClamWin Free Antivirus >>useful as a second opinion<< http://www.clamwin.com/ BitDefender 8 Free Edition http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-1...e-Edition.html Then there are also these offers which might be useful: Antivirus software & firewall protection Get special offers from the following software companies for antivirus and firewall packages. • Computer Associates 12-month free trial • Antivirus • F-Secure 6-month free trial • McAfee 90-day free trial • Antivirus • Firewall • Panda Software 90-day free trial • Symantec (Norton) 90-day free trial • Trend Micro GO TO: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx Security Software: Downloads and Trials |
