Colour Spanish Civil War Feature Film Available
Date : 28/07/2006 ![]() This year being the Seventieth Anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, beginning on July 17th 1936 we would like to spotlight our extremely rare documentary ‘Defenders of the Faith’. Made in late 1936 and early 1937 this documentary was the first known war film in colour, it is pro Franco and contrasts harrowing battle footage with scenes of everyday life during this fascinating war which became an ideological battleground for the whole of Europe. To mark the Anniversary the feature film has been broadcast in its entirely in Spain and Latin America. Made by American businessman Russell Palmer, to our knowledge the film has not been seen in the United States since the 1930s when it was shown to groups of businessmen and political leaders across the nation to generate support for the Nationalist cause. To mark the Anniversary the feature film has been broadcast in its entirely in Spain and Latin America. An important historical document as well as a fascinating depiction of a country at war with itself, 'Defenders of the Faith' is available to licence both in clip form and as a whole feature exclusively through Film Images (London). For those interested, here's a 2 minutes preview of the documentary (in Spanish):
