Default Inland Empire

Directed by David Lynch, shot on DV instead of film.

A long-time Lynch fan, I couldn't resist the temptation. It is a thematic sequel to Eraserhead, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, since Inland Empire too is about personal crisis, confusion and loss of identity. These films also have the rather unconventional dramaturgy in common. And there is a narrative within the narrative, in the form of a movie set for an upcoming film called 'On High in Blue Tomorrow'. The weirder parts of the movie are sometimes hard to concentrate on.

And btw, there is such a thing as a story-line in this movie, despite what you may hear. In my opinion it's about a woman's fantasy of infidelity for the most part, but I've already heard different takes on that. It does not portray infidelity from a liberal perspective, but as something scary and destructive.

Part of the movie is shot in Poland, with Polish dialogue even.

I saw Inland Empire a few months back, and while I enjoyed it to some degree, it will never rank as my favourite David Lynch film. That honour goes to Mulholland Drive.

My personal favourite is Twin Peaks. I haven't seen Inland Empire yet, but I'm planning to.

I think my favourite would be The Elephant Man, or Dune.

I am not a movie buff myself, so I would not dare comment on the qualities of Lynch's works because of my limited frame of reference, but I found all of his works (especially Twin Peaks) very intriguing - except for Dune. I have not yet seen Inland Empire.

Well. Dune was based on the novel, that's why there were not many places for maneuvre.

He said himself that Dune wasn't one he considered to be a hit. But I like it. I also like The Straight Story. I cannot keep from seeing his every movie, so I guess I'm hooked. But the more experimental stuff he's done is... well... it has some really good moments and some really awkward moments, in my opinion. Sometimes I find myself laughing, not knowing whether it is the B-movie "action" or something in the narrative. What's the difference anyway. I hated Wild At Heart by the way. Probably the only one I didn't like at all.
