Signs would probably be my favorite.
That movie, dispite the suspencful climax, was utterly retarded. Think about it, the Aliens are so advanced they traveled all this way to make signs or "maps" in fields for other ones coming, like scouts. Their flaw is that water is like acid on them, so why didn't the stupid Aliens relise this planet was covered 71% by Water, and it rains! Why didn't the Aliens get rained on and find out they might not be able to live on the planet? How do they breath? Really, our atmosphere has Oxygen and hydrogen (small amounts), and a trace amount of water vapour. What would happen if the aliens walked through a fog? For that matter, if the aliens were so advanced to get here, why didn't they bombard Earth from space and wipe out the inhabbitants or construct a bioweapon to kill humans?

The movie was poorly thought out and seriously lacked science-fiction intellectualism. They only cared about making a thriller that didnt have to make sense or be smart at all, they just wanted the money of making the movie, not caring what crap they released. And don't get me started on that whole Mel Gibson, priest, faith and destiny plot they had going either.

I think all you said stands also from my perspective,
but I never thought the aliens wanted to overtake earth,
I just thought they dropped in for a quick snack.

They had the TV News talk of many ships around the world. They implied invasion especially with the Army Recruiter character, that was the meaning of that whole scene (forgetting the establishment that the brother was a baseball player).

Don't get me wrong, it is well filmed and crafted so you are on the edge of your seat, but they seriously messed up on the Aliens' weakness.

Well, yeah, I admit I liked it too, but it was a very flawed movie.
I have no desire to see it once again.

I didn't think of it as a sci-fi movie, and did not expect it to be. It's all about expectations...you seemed to be prepared for something which the movie turned out not to be. I did not know what to expect and I found it to be a good drama with some suspense and thrills thrown in. I thought Gibson and Phoenix played good roles, and I really liked the whole losing and regaining of Faith bit. Not the greatest film ever made, but interesting enough for me to have liked it.

Most importantly, I did not fall asleep, and actually watched the whole thing. Good or not, something about it made we want to keep watching, and that's what counts in the end.

In every movie, I expect a flawless storyline, like in every book. If they don't have it, I call the story a piece of .

The whole Allies backdrop was only that, an excuse to make a religious flick Mel Gibson style, where hope and determination along with some forgivness crap is the whole point of the movie. The allies thing was just an excuse...most of what Timo said I also thought and laughted with my buddies when leaving the theatre...LOL...They were to adavanced they did not even have a stupid laser pistol and had to attack with their claws and could not manage to break down a freaking old wodden basement door. A freaking muzzle loading Pirate pistol would have helped them conquer the earth..They can travel through space but have to attack with their claws and have nothing like a space suite..that would...hello!!!...shield them from that water.

His movies are "one-time-watch" movies. They are made so that they are suspenceful and entertaining, but once you know the "twist" at the end, the movies doesn't have the appeal when you watch it for a secound time. I liked the Sixth Sense the first time I watched it, and I liked how he dropped clues in (the red objects). I didn't have anything agianst this movie, but it wasn't a favourite or even one I'd watch a third time (I watch it agian to see the hints left behind that the guy was a ghost, ie the red objects). The Village was more my type because I am interest in pre-industrialism, and a return to such times. I liked the entire idea of the Village and the Utopia was quite good and without shi**y modernism and minorities (I wonder if the jews in hollywood picked up on that). Though like his other movies, once you know the end, the movie looses it's catch and appeal. I enjoyed watching both thoughs, the first time, though. So, I can say that he did his job, if his goal was to make a movie people who enjoy watching the first time and leave feeling astonished at the end.
