I have this documentary my friend burned for me that the history channel released a few days before the release of 300. It's basically a comparison of how it really was in real life.

It's like Midnight Express. I am no fan of Turks, but that movie was the same in it's portrayal of Turks. It was filmed in Malta and they hired locals and Greeks to play the Turks (not only that but apparently the Turkish used in the movie is incomprehensible to Turks and instead Maltese was used as Turkish at least once). Interesting to note. The person who wrote the script for Alexander did Midnight Express are the same person -- Oliver Stone. It seems when Alexander was being filmed he in an interview to Turkish media apologized admitting that he wrongfully portrayed the story. Given that he's admitted this and that most of his movies based on something tend to be extreme distortions one can conclude the Alexander (the movie) is a distortion.

Alexander was an awful movie! It just wouldn't end. The funny thing is that Colin Ferrell's Dublin accent was strangely copied by all the other actors except Angelina Jolie, who decides to sound sort of Russian.

The problem is when people take the historical accounts seriously. Is it even supposed to be accurate? It's after all based on a graphic novel.

I wonder why the film came out at a time when the neo-conservatives are pushing for a war against Iran. Was it a coincidence?

I don't know if the Russians left any trace in Gilan. Nevertheless the girl from Rasht on that page has a look I associate with ethnic Russians. Perhaps it's some older relation as I've seen pictures of similar Afghans too.
