In what could become a highly emotive election issue, the Fine Gael leader claimed the country could be totally changed in 20 years' time if immigrants do not integrate.
Mr Kenny, in a speech certain to raise eyebrows, also claimed the current system of managing immigration was not working.
He also highlighted the fact that some new arrivals had become involved in criminality and said this was not a race issue but an issue of law and order.

He said: "We want to bring about a situation that is fair for the immigrant and fair for the Irish."
Anxious to avoid accusations of playing the race card, Fine Gael handlers insisted the speech, delivered to a parliamentary party meeting in Dublin, was not about race but about crime and the need for integration.
Mr Kenny said new arrivals "have the responsibility to integrate into our community" and respect Irish customs and traditions.
He said "some organisations" of foreign nationals were operating in a "mafia style" and were engaged in serious criminality.
Mr Kenny said there was evidence of al-Qa\'ida cells in Ireland, as well as "other serious criminal and terrorist groups".
The Fine Gael leader offered a pledge to expel from Ireland those who had been convicted of a serious offence here and sentenced to five years in jail.

He said he would introduce primary legislation in Government to give effect to an automatic deportation policy for those convicted of serious crimes.
Saying Ireland was a "Celtic and Christian country", he said the rate of immigration had caused the greatest economic and social transformation since independence.
Immigrants had both rights and responsibilities, and "immigration must be managed in a way that keeps Ireland safe."
Mr Kenny said that while immigrants had the right to be free of discrimination and to have their contribution recognised, "they have the responsibility to integrate into our community, comply with our laws and respect our cultural traditions".
He added: "I do not want to see a situation developing in which our immigrant population live separate lives."
Ireland now had the opportunity to learn from the experience of other countries, he said.

There should be an honest and healthy public debate "about the future and the kind of country we want in twenty years.
"This is a debate we should have here in Ireland, involving everybody, so that we can get it right. With 10pc of our population not Irish-born, we have a duty to ourselves and those that come after us to put in place a process to see that it is done properly."
But Mr Kenny also said it was very important to send out a message internationally that Ireland was not a "soft touch".

Whether they integrate or not, the population of this country will change. Integration is not miraculous.

Saying Ireland was a "Celtic and Christian country", he said the rate of immigration had caused the greatest economic and social transformation since independence.

As we can see, it's not a problem of integration/assimilation, but an immigration one. The solution to keep Ireland Celtic and Christian is not integration.

No, it isn't. Anyway, "integration" is nothing more than a socio-economic or systemic term. It doesn't fit in the real life, that is the public life.

I agree with the two posts above but I'd still add that Enda Kenny's statement is very welcome. Maybe FG will start being called Blueshirts more often.

Everyone speaking about 'integration' as magic solution to the problem, yet in decades of immigration into Europe since WW2, no country has yet managed to 'integrate' immigrants 'successfuly'. By that I mean lowering immigrant crime-rate, poverty, etc. (obviously from nationalistic point of view there are other issues as well) Everyone speaks about it even though nothing is being done in that direction, also never mind that there are new ones coming even though the 'old ones' haven't been integrated yet.

The socio-economic...whatever term in fact should be: ethnocide by re-population. Folk is not the sum of different ethnicities living in one certain country.
