I read his statement a little differently. He is being too clever but I think what he is saying to the Jewish community is that if they think they can demand changes in Catholic liturgy then the Catholics can demand the same from them. In other words, back off unless you want the Catholic Church to start getting into your internal Jewish affairs.

Most people probably are not aware at how Judaism traditionally views Christianity. Now, more people do. What lends some credence to this theory is that the prayers for the conversion of the Jews were largely done away with in the Novus Ordo after Vatican II anyway. So he's basically saying we'll do away with something which we already more or less have done anyway, and then gets across the point that Jews have a decidedly intolerant tradition themselves. Then again, we are discussing the notorious American clergy... ![]()

The traditions of the Irish people are the oldest of any race in Europe north and west of the Alps, and they themselves are the longest settled on their own soil - Edmund Curtis (A History of Ireland: From Earliest Times to 1922) The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth. For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish. - Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596). The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation. - Arsene Darmesteter, Professor of Old French and Literature Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation. - Heinrich Zimmer, Professor of Celtic and Sanskrit, Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences |

From what little I've read about him, he seems to swim in between to seas.
I'd propose that only Irish clergymen be anointed for the hierarchy of the Church in North America.

That's what's not fair. Think of how our cultures and religion are presented just in Hollywood films alone while people can be fined or sent to prison for saying such things about the Jewish religion and culture. Imagine a movie like the Da Vinci Code except the secret international conspiracy is Jewish rather than Christian. If it were somehow made in Iran, or somewhere similar, it would never make it to a screen in many European states.

I love how the Catholic Church is supposed to bow down to the complaints of the Jews for one verse on one day of the year calling for their conversion. Isn't every religion supposed to believe in the rightousness of their cause. The Church is not calling them wicked or for their death (we let the Muslims hold that tenent). It is amazing how the Church comes under attack from progressives and Jews for trying to return to a more "Catholic" Roman Catholic Church. It is this Tridentine Latin Mass that makes the Church truly universal. Shame on the non-Catholics and Jews for trying to dictate the norms of the Catholic Church. Don't worry we'll pray for your conversion.

In all honesty I don't hope (let alone pray) for the conversion of the Jews to Christianity. Unfortunately I don't think many of them can make that promise with any kind of sincerity; there has been too much bad history between our two religions. The most we could all hope is they learn to be good citizens of whatever state they happen to inhabit. That itself would be a monumental accomplishment.

We don't lack historical examples of this. What the Inquisition in Spain had to deal with was with the problem of the false convert Marranos, crypto-judaism and judaisation. Not in vain it was said that "there is no worse Jew than the converse".
