Bah... I hope they'll learn something from this and never try to build something like that again.

What strikes me is that it could be anything. You don’t look at it and think – that is a Church.
I look and it and think it’s an office block. I suppose the idea is that eventually they can convert it into a block of apartments or offices or whatever once they drive enough of the faithful away with their Modernist claptrap that they no longer require a church anymore (or the local populace becomes majority Muslim).

For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish. - Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596). ![]() |

There is some very good looking modern buildings but this thing in Evry isn't one of them. It looks very sinister from the front (like the head of a man-eating giant) and very ordinary from behind (like a high school in southern California). The good news is that it could easily be deconsecrated and turned into something else.

Worryingly for a Catholic church, it has no altar (morea bare podium with a Novus Ordo table), and even the crucifix hanging up isn't a crucifix. Bulldoze it and try again. 1/10 for effort. Must do better.

I think the worst architectural crime is committed when an older building has some ugly glass and steel junk added to it. This was done by Daniel Libeskind in Toronto:
This is the private home of the architect Frank Gehry. It looks like a police station in the north of Ireland in back before the ceasefire. ![]() Frank Gehry and the Simpsons : mirage.studio.7 |
