I was delighted when a friend informed me that Claudio Baglioni, Gianni Morandi and Riccardo Cocciante were holding a free concert in Malta. My delight faded into oblivion when Baglioni's (the main man of the event) self-described “political manifestation” was turned into a direct promotion of mass immigration to Malta candied with rosy (or rossi) politically correct words.
I'm a great admirer of Italian music and culture, a culture which I consider part and parcel of Malta's heritage and identity as per history and tradition. The political nature of Baglioni's manifestation will definitely not change that, but his political propaganda is something I will not treasure. Baglioni's call for the elimination of boundaries, his one worldism and his promotion of mass immigration (which happens to be mostly illegal), made me suspect a hint of communism.
No hint, but fact. I was confirmed in this thought in relation to Baglioni when I found Baglioni's declarations to La Repubblica that after his confusion as an adolescent he voted for the Partito Comunista Italiano and that “e poi sono sempre stato di sinistra” (“I was always a leftist”)1. According to Baglioni, in his youth they considered him a leftist extremist2.
The worse of it all for the Maltese was having two “nationalist” senior figures and ministers of the Republic like Tonio Borg and Francis Zammit Dimech signing a declaration that Baglioni's “political manifestation” won't be the last of its kind in Malta. This was done together with Italian Minister Clemente Mastella who is a leftist Christian Democrat allied to communists in the governing coalition in Italy.
Apparently PN has now given itself to promote the “political manifestations” of communists sympathisers in Malta. Perhaps this is a true manifestation of Christian Democracy. “Il centro che guarda a sinistra” of the Christian Democrat Alcide de Gasperi is applied in Malta by self-described Christian Democrats whom favour the “political manifestations” of someone having sympathy for communism.
The Christian Democratic PN promoting the “political manifestations” of those bent on telling us to open our borders to mass immigration is, as a traditional PN supporter, reaching the bottom. I guess that means that I cannot hold fast to my political views and vote, as I usually did, a party that now promotes such communist or leftist drivel.
Edric Micallef Figallo, Nadur.
