Konec 19. stoletja je zavest o slovenskem etničnem ozemlju bolj kot kdaj koli prej prispevala k uresničevanju nacionalnih zahtev in ciljev slovenske intelektualne družbe. Mnogi politiki in književniki so se kmalu zavedli, da pri narodnostnih zahtevah ne gre spregledati skrajnega vzhodnega dela etničnega ozemlja – Prekmurja – kjer je v drugi polovici 19. stoletja živelo blizu 70 000 Slovencev.
