Default The Rose of Tralee

Difficult choice but I've provisionally voted for Aoibhinn, the Connacht girl with beauty, brains, and culture. Honours degree in physics, a placement at CERN, Gaeilgeora, writer, singer, songwriter, poet, ....sigh

Quote:
Aoibhinn is 22 and has recently received First Class Honours in her Theoretical Physics Degree from UCD and plans to continue her post graduate studies in Bio-Physics. Her impressive academic achievements include a student placement in 2004 at CERN (Centre European de Research Nuclear) in Geneva, awards in the international Mathematical Contest in Modelling, an Entrance Scholarship from UCD in 2001 and scholarships from Bord Na Gaeilge. This native Irish speaker loves singing and also plays concertina, piano and guitar. She has been a member of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for many years and has awards for sean-nós singing, Cómhra Gaeilge and Grúpa Ceoil. Aoibhinn has won national awards for short-story and poetry and is an enthsiastic singer-songwriter. She has five younger brothers, loves travelling and fishing on Lough Carra.

The traditions of the Irish people are the oldest of any race in Europe north and west of the Alps, and they themselves are the longest settled on their own soil
- Edmund Curtis (A History of Ireland: From Earliest Times to 1922)

The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth.
For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish.
- Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596).

The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation.
- Arsene Darmesteter, Professor of Old French and Literature

Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation.
- Heinrich Zimmer, Professor of Celtic and Sanskrit, Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences

It used to be a beauty contest where pretty local girls told the admiring on-lookers how much they wanted to be married and how many children they wanted to raise.

Now, it's more likely to be some girl from Tashkent who works in the ministry of internal security and whose great aunt once met a woman whose brother stayed in Dublin for a day

Still, it's good fun

I see. And how many children all these girls will have in the future? At best between 1 and 1,2 or maybe none...

You Luxembourgers are more sneaky than a camouflaged bag of sneaky things
