Cornish Separatists Target Jamie Oliver


The Cornish National Liberation Army is anti-Oliver.

Cornish extremists have threatened a restaurant run by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. In fact they've promised to target anyone who dares to fly an English flag in Cornwall -- in, um, the south of England.

Two restaurants run by celebrity chefs in Britain have been threatened with violence by an obscure group of pro-Celtic separatists in Cornwall, the Guardian reported on Thursday.

A group called the Cornish National Liberation Army (CNLA) threatened to burn down Jamie Oliver's restaurant Fifteen in Newquay, labelling Oliver an "incomer" who has hurt locals by driving up housing prices. They also threatened another popular tourist spot -- Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant, in Padstow -- and said the cars of Stein's customers would be targets.

"It is common knowledge that Rick Stein and his businesses are held in contempt by many Cornish nationals who live in the Padstow area," the group's e-mail claimed.

The problem, it seems, is that Stein and Oliver are English, while the CNLA stands up for the local Celtic oppressed. Oliver established Fifteen as a way to help disadvantaged Cornish kids learn about food service and catering; but the Cornish nationalists appear to feel patronized. They promised to target anyone who flew the English flag of St. George, which they called "imperialistic and tainted."

Celtic separatists in Cornwall have resisted English rule for centuries, notably in a march on London in 1497 when Henry VII raised a tax to pay for a war against Scotland. The march was halted and its leaders hanged, drawn and quartered. Among the leaders was a blacksmith named Michael An Gof, whose name has since been used by various groups agitating for Cornish independence.

The CNLA claimed to include members of a 1980s outfit called An Gof, and said it had funding from other "Celtic nations," as well as the United States.

Dick Cole, who leads a pro-Cornwall political party called Mebyon Kernow, said he was "very saddened that we seem to have a handful of people running around masquerading as some pseudo-terrorist group, threatening businesses and their customers," according to the Telegraph.

Mebyon Kernow's leader is right in that they probably are just a handful of people.

Saying that "Celtic separatists in Cornwall have resisted English rule for centuries", seems to be much of an overstatement. It is probably why Mebyon Kernow is not an independentist party but simply looks for broader autonomy.

A paradox here is that during Norman rule when Norman French language was imposed over English, the one rebellion against came from the Cornish.

Am i the only one that likes Jamie? I think that he did a great jobb in trying to get better food in the schools etc. Fast food is a no no!

I think that too. I didn't much like him until I saw him trying to improve school dinners.

I think he comes off as a bit annoying, like so many other entertainers, but I sympathize with his projects, for instance the cooking school for misbehaving boys (that was the idea, right?). And if he can pull some otherwise lost young souls out of the Pit of Eternal Fastfood Damnation with his books and tv shows, I respect that.

I am also joining the choir of those expressing their annoyance at the persona of Jamie Oliver.

This "naked cook's" meals seem to contain too much of his saliva, because he is not able to close his mouth while preparing them.

Jamie Oliver is well annoying. I just cant stand him, theres just something about him.
