Default Various questions regarding spain.

Okay so I have a project due tomorrow and I just have a few questions regarding Spain:

What is the primary ethnic/anthropological makeup of Spain?

Which population was there first?
What are some particular historical highlights?
Notable changes in politics, et cetera.

I also have a big project on benzene too.

Oh well. Someone's got to do it!

Being in the southwestern corner of Europe, the Iberian Peninsula was a refuge for many groups from the north during the various Ice Ages. Most basic European anthropological types therefore have some representatives there. There's been some interaction [genetic, ethnic, political and cultural]with the afacing North African coasts, with the Mediterranean in general, with continental Europe over the Pyrenees, and up and down the Atlantic facade. I for instance am supposed to look not too unlike a Spaniard, and am yet half English half Irish.

If we look at historical, rather than archaeological aspects [which are open to interpretation anyway] the first known people were the Iberians. They created quite an advanced culture down in the far southwest of the peninsula, being marine traders, known as Tartessus, or the Tardesh [sp?] of the Bible. Classical writers [Strabo?] wrote that they even had an elaborate recorded history, going back centuries, but unfortunately lost. In the hinterland, things were less developed.
At some point in the later centuries BC, Celts arrived in the peninsula, giving the name Galicia to the northwestern corner, and mixing in the central regions with the Iberian natives to produce the Celtiberians.
With Phoenician influence, Levantine culture began to take root in coastal areas, and the Iberians began to use their own new alphabet.

The Phoenicians founded Carthage, and then began to compete with Rome, and so Hasdrubal and Hannibal conquered large territories in Iberia, and it's thought that the name Hispania owes its origin to the Carthaginians.

Rome won, of course, and so the land became a vital province of the Empire. Latin speech eventually predominated, giving us the modern languages of Castilian, Catalan, Portuguese/Galician, except in the far north, where the nonIndoEuropean Basque language survives as a relic of preIE western Europe. Basque doesn't seem to be a descendant of Iberian, but is rather connected to the Aquitanian language of preRoman southwestern Gaul, and so must have spread over the Pyrenees to the south and west.

Hispania escaped most of the troubles of the late Empire, but eventually was claimed by the Germanic Visigoths. The Vandals passed through on the way to North Africa, and the Suebi also established themselves in Galicia for a while.

Gothic Spain fell to Islam, was later retaken, and the rest is history.

A Mesolithic population?

The Iberian and Celt influence in the Iberian Peninsula are processes of aculturisation and to some extents elements added to an older indigenous substratum.

Some even speculate over a Ligurian element before the Iberian. But this is uncertain.

I have a question regarding Spain: are foreign movies and tv shows also dubbed in Catalan or Catalan speakers just watch them dubbed in stardard Spanish/Castillian?

Yes, they're all dubbed, both for TV and cinema (although with cinema there are many exceptions, like these films being not so popular). And the same happens with TV commercials btw, at least since the 80's.

Thanks for the information everyone! It will help with the continuation of my presentation tomorrow!

I'm making paella to feed everyone in my class. I really, really hope that I don't mess it up. I'm only using the vegetable ingredients because I think there are vegetarians and I am not going to go out and buy meat to make something for class.
