People will have to visit a certain country sooner or later for business/historical/leisure purposes and I think what is most important is to respect that place one goes to. Hardly anyone likes foreigners to come to his country and leave a mess wherever they go or disrepsect the locals.

Tourism is the main industry in Malta. The population in Malta swells heavily in summer leading to financial income but also strains on our resources. Most of our tourists are of Germanic origin (these are the sun-loving type generally, totally ignoring 7000 years of history), however after EU entry, our fratelli Italiani started to feature more and more probably due to the fact that most Maltese speak Italian making it easier for Italians.
I am in favour of tourism, especially if tourists are really interested in our History and Culture. Obviously I prefer European tourists, in particular if female... :p

Come visit the country as a tourist, spend your money and have fun, but leave our country the way you found it, don't mess with it. That is my view.

Well, if the general view is that tourists are welcomed as long as they are not a nuisance (in any way) then off I go to Ireland this summer
I intend on spending only two weeks there, then it's a week in Cornwall and home.Cheers

I like cultural tourism and some leisure tourism too. But the mass tourism in Spain has lead to the destruction of most of the coastal area. I don't blame tourists for it, but especulators. Sadly, this massification was the result of the policies in the 50s and 60s when Spain was an isolated country with few other means to develop. Now it constitutes a major industry.
It goes without saying that the British are a class of their own as tourists too. (Hello Biggles! ). An ignorant herd that spoils those places that they step on.I remember years ago reading on The Sunday Telegraph a special report on Spain, entitled "Where the Spaniards retreat when the British invade". It was a various pages report on areas of hinterland Spain, still unpolluted by the Brits. A cold shiver ran through my dorsal spine as I realized that that might mark the beginning of the end for the unspoiled rural spots in Spain.

I would introduce quotas for tourists, when they are too much they ruin everything and create social distortions, expecially in poorer countries.
Personally i try to go where i can find the lower number of tourists, in order to visit a "real" new country and not a beach that is similar to all the other touristic beaches in the world, for example. |

I only went to Roma - La Città Eterna, and I was there for Culture not for the sun (when one is Maltese he should rather seek a cloudy holiday). European Tourism should be a Cultural one. I notice that Germanics that visit Malta are generally here for the weather, other Europeans, in particular Italians are here for more highbrow reasons, perhaps except those Italians studying English in Malta.
