European martial arts (fencing and arms ad legs fighting) didn\'t survive the introduction of the fireamrs, unlike the japanese ones. But we had a great tradition too. See Association for Renaissance Martial Arts - Swords & Swordsmanship . And yes, the tradition has been rediscovered by americans, and they are not the stormfront type ... trust that website, it is full of reverence for our old european martial arts and of serious works on european historical fencing and fighting. BTW, our medieval and renaissance swords were often not inferior to katanas ... norse blades were built in the same way, with a multilayered, very sophisticated approach. Shed your Hollywood and Hong Kong kung fu movie myths ... fighters do not fly ...

Nice stuff. Ok, the major problem is that no one is walking with a stick any more. ![]() Capoera is much more popular these days...

What don't you like about them? The fact that they are of Asian origin?

The traditions of the Irish people are the oldest of any race in Europe north and west of the Alps, and they themselves are the longest settled on their own soil - Edmund Curtis (A History of Ireland: From Earliest Times to 1922) The Irish are one of the most ancient nations that I know of at this end of the world, and are from as mighty a race as the world ever brought forth. For it is certain that Ireland hath had the use of letters very anciently and long before England; that they had letters anciently is nothing doubtful, for the Saxons of England are said to have their letters and learning, and learned men, from the Irish. - Edmund Spenser (writer, and British Government Official in Ireland, AD 1596). The renaissance began in Ireland seven hundred years before it was known in Italy. And Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, was at one time the metropolis of civilisation. - Arsene Darmesteter, Professor of Old French and Literature Ireland can indeed lay claim to a great past; she can not only boast of having been the birthplace and abode of high culture in the fifth and sixth centuries . . . but also of having made strenous efforts in the seventh and up to the tenth century to spread her learning among the German and Romance peoples, thus forming the actual fountain of our present continental civilisation. - Heinrich Zimmer, Professor of Celtic and Sanskrit, Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences |

In a combatsituation things would have been very different, and in my case probably of no use. Btw, one of the parttakers of that workgroup are member here, and may probably witness this shocking experience. But what use of it, exept of to brag of? ![]() It says that it is possible, and the story demonstrates that such is within reach for about anyone that dedicates oneself to the arts. No need to search special teachers, it is up to the candidate to shop from various arts, and put it together to a synthesis. It is possible, and the knowledge of that, should challenge the limits of what one think is possible, and within reach, also for oneself. Have you ever by the way tried to run up a tree? By some training, it is easy possible to run 2 meters straight up. Translate the principe to walls, and the "flying chinese`s" art are not so unrealistic. We Portuguese have a similar method of combat called Jogo do Pau which also involves the use of sticks, although they are much larger than the ones in the videos you posted.
