Default Celtic Castro of Coaña (Asturias)

Castro de Coaña

It is located near the town of Villacondide, in the area of Coaña. Although discontinual, the excavation process started early and it was lively at times. Starting in 1985 there was a rush to recover the landscape around it, which included the closure of the old rubbish dumps, and modern forest plantations.

The village extends on the height of a small hill cut in part by a narrow stream, and it is made up by to different sectors which are today known as the acropolis and the northern neighbourhood.

Although there were never doubts about the romanisation of the castro, acredited by the findings of numerous imported materials like fine ceramics, glass, coins, etc., during a long time it was thought that it had older origins and, in one way or another, its relation with the Celtic influxes.

With the documentation that we posses today and after more recent investigations, it appears that the village is posterior to the Roman conquest, with a momentum of higher vitality during the second half of the I A.D. century, although it could survive until about the end of the III A.D. This does not deny that there may exist in some spot the remains of an earlier village, although this is unknown at this moment.

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.
