700 archeology sites found in Iran
700 archeology sites found in Iran
Archeologists have identified historic sites in Sistan-Baluchestan province, dating back to the Achaemenid and Sassanid dynasties.
The found was made by the archeology team of Sistan-Baluchestan University, which identified more than 700 historic and prehistoric sites in the first part of a two-phase archeological dig in the province.
Most of the sites date back to the Achaemenid (550-330 BCE) and Sassanid (224-651 CE) empires; however, some of them are believed to date back to the Burnt City itself.
"Finding evidence as old as the Burnt City was the most important achievement of the archeological activities we have performed," Mousavi Haji said, referring to the influence the find has had on understanding the people who lived in the region in the past.
"We now understand that these areas had industrial centers as we have discovered a large number of decorative semi-precious gems such as lapis and opal," he added.
New discoveries show that using gems as ornaments was not limited to the Burnt City; satellite scans of the terrain reveal that this prehistoric region also enjoyed similar industrial activity.
All information revealed by the research will be gathered and categorized in an archeological atlas for Sistan-Baluchestan province.
