Default Roman Frescoes & Mosaics

I´m salvaging some of the interesting stuff at The Phora

This will be an ongoing thread about Romans despicting themselves (or others) to give us a look on how they saw themselves. Any contribution is welcome.

More Roman fun

There seems to be a recuring theme of heavily sun tanned males and pale women. It seems a masculinity thing as you can see Warrior Gods in the same light.

I found some nice pictures of very ancient Italian wall paintings of Paestum, around 400 BC.

Great stuff you got here mate. I was really captured by the painting of Iphigenia, so I did a bit of amateur reconstruction:

Default Question

When I was little (6 years old or so), we were on vacation in Northern Spain (on the medditerranean coast). We were in a tiny village, not that far from a Roman archeaological site, which was quite large and was open to the tourists to see. I remember it had some nice mosaics. I realize there may be dozens of digs in Northern Spain like this, but does anyone know what that place might be called? We had a book about it but that seems to have been misplaced, my mom said. I ask cause I remember liking the place and I have been hitting myself up the head for a while now trying to remember the name.

That must have been the ancient Greco-Roman Emporion (Ampurias o Empuries in Spanish/Català)

Default AW: Roman Frescoes & Mosaics

...indeed after coming across this thread I have come to the same conclusion as others on this & concluded this is an excellent effort. Not to mention a job well done, this one gets the sticky treatment & add to that a five star rating.
