Islam started as a Christian heresy.
According to Hilaire Belloc, it is infact an over-simplified Christianity. Mohammed took ceratin elements from Christianity and rejected other. He took those elements that favoured his agenda. A practical man, indeed, rather than spiritual.
In order to arouse fanaticism of Arabic tribes, he converted the Christian ideal of martyrdom, which consisted in dying for your own faith (at hands of persecutors of faith), into a different idea of martyrdom, which consisted in dying in battle fighting a war to spread Islam. This was one of the keys to his success.
