Socialist Left calls for reactions against Israel Source

The Socialist Left Party (SV) wants Norway to re-call its ambassador to Israel as a reaction against Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip. Coalition partner Labour rejects the proposal.

On NRK TV News on Sunday, SV's spokesman on defence matters, Bjoern Jacobsen, said Norway ought to consider re-calling its ambassador to Israel as a reaction, if the attacks on Gaza are not stopped.

However, government coalition partner Labour (AP) rejects the proposal.

- What is important now, is action, not symbol politics, says AP's MP Marit Nybakk.

At Easter time, SV and AP also expressed different opinions on Norwegian support to Hamas.

However, Nybakk sees no problems with the coalition partners' different approaches to the Middle East problems.

Opposition Conservative Party leader Erna Solberg says Norway may risk spoiling its role in the Middle East, if it re-calls its ambassador to Israel. In her opinion, the proposal is only designed to mollify SV's own supporters.
