The point to bear in mind is that, while mass migrations are destructive in ethnic and cultural terms (even among such varied Germanic types since, for example the Scandinavian countries at this point in their evolution have their distinct identity among the Germanic peoples), a limited interchange works in the opposite direction. Europe has not evolved through history by being a collection of completely isolated territories, and the exchange of knowledge in every aspect has involved a minimum of assimilable human interchange.
