Bad as it may be, it is always an advantage the fact that it is hard to hear from a non European saying "I'm French/Polish/etc". Exceptions to this are the British and perhaps the Dutch. I hear that in the US it is common that Mexicans say "I'm Spanish". Not surprising since Americans are not expected to tell the deceit. And not a point case here.
That retains on people the unmovable idea that they do not belong here.
