This is not a "sentiment" but a(n) (future) obligation : there is a clause of mutual defense in EU Constitution. There is a more important obligation in WEU (Western European Union) but I think Malta doesn't belong to it though. Anyway I don't think anybody will try to invade an EU country (militarily).
