Second, regarding the comment I quoted. The same happened in Malta when British (and I believe also NATO) troops left the island in 1979. Incredible indeed.
Regarding Cultural Manipulation. Well, check my signature from the 1947 Maltese Nationalist Party idea to get an idea of what happened in Malta with Colonialism/Occupation and the failed liberation of Malta at the hands of the Axis. Even calling it a liberation is practically equal to a sin, goes to show the severe manipulations inflicted. Malta believes it won the war in the name of freedom, in fact, we lost all that made us truly Maltese. Thanks to Anglo-Americana.
