It's not particularly surprising, as religion is not science. One can be religious yet approach a subject with the scientific method. There may have been a God and it may have done magic omnipotent things, but we haven't found them yet. What we find are scientific explanations.

Science has has many of religion's virtues, but none of its
vices. Religion prides itself on its independence from evidence, while science is based on it. Religion has benefits, such as uplift, but so does science.
