Germany to curb neo-Nazis before May WWII ceremonies

Germany will introduce measures to curb neo-Nazi marches amid concerns extremists will tarnish celebrations in May to mark the end of World War Two in Europe.
The measures will have no effect on extremists who threaten to upstage Sunday's commemoration of the destruction of the city of Dresden by Allied forces during the war.
The interior ministry was spurred into action by the plans of the far right to march past a Jewish memorial in Berlin and sweep through the Brandenburg Gate in May.
"It would be intolerable if Nazi violence and despotism could be glorified or played down and their victims taunted," Interior Minister Otto Schily said in a statement on Friday.
The measures, to be pushed through parliament before the 60th anniversary events in May, will prevent gatherings at Nazi concentration camps and a Holocaust remembrance site being built in Berlin, the Interior Ministry said.
Rallies which glorified or played down Nazi violence and tyranny could also be banned as part of the plans to broaden the definition of criminal incitement.
Schily said the neo-Nazis gatherings were growing and seemed increasingly to resemble the activities of the Nazis. "There has been a continual increase in right wing gatherings in the past years which in theme, location and form increasingly resemble the imprint of historic marches of the Nazi regime," he said.
The far right rally in Dresden, perhaps its largest since the war, will focus on the "Allied bombing terror" and could cause embarrassment by portraying Germany as a victim and ignoring Nazi atrocities.
