As the above discussion would suggest, they just constitute southernly extensions of Germany. Due to the size of country, there is somewhat of a division between north and south.
They probably dont feel much akin to northern Germans, if I should have to bet. But another question would be if most of them are not related to Bavaria, as opposed to Prussia.
