It is just about linguistics. Watch my posts in "What is Slavic" thread.
I'm Slovenian, I speak Slavic langauge, and that's all I have in common with let's say.. Russian. Apart from being European.

The term may not be of much meaning, that depends how its used, but that does not mean their descent, culture or history is not Slavic.

Slavic culture and history don't exist. As for descent, it's a complex thing, speaking Slavic language does not necessary mean having "Slavic" descent, I can happen trough cultural influence or other influences. Just like Hungarians today speak finno-ugric language and yet their descent is not "finno-ugric". You have many more simmilar examples, I can even put Jamaica here as an example. Are they "Germanic"?
Slovenians are regarded as 'Slavs' and yet it is unlikely that our descent is
Slavic, even if Slavs came here in 6th century (very unlikely), it still wouldn't mean that we have Slavic descent, as there was no ethnocide over the original population. As I said, there are no few cases in history, when a certain population adopted the language of much smaller (in numbers) population of invaders. There is of course another theory, that western Slavs are original population of central Europe.
