There is a social barrier. The Sephardim are longer established and usually of higher standing from a class perspective then the Ashkenazim, The Sephardim are fewer in number but came from a urban proffessional background. The Ashkenazim were peasants in comparison. Sephardim were the most common element of the British Jewry community until the late 19th century.
