As should the expansion of NATO and the EU to the East. Keep Russia weak and out of Europe is one of the key strategies of U.S. domination of Eurasia, and Brzizinska outlines in his book The Grand Chessboard. But I wonder what effect a Balkan conflict could have on EU resistence forces in Western Europe, particularly England. I Know that in the 90's some Britons went to Yugoslavia to vollunteer in the struggle on various sides. Perhaps this outbreak of conflict in the Balkans could lead to a greater struggle that will threaten the stability of the EU. Hopefully.
I don't think Kosovo independence is a war that Europeans in the west would want to fight. In 1999 there were no volunteers from Europe on the Albanian side (on the Serb side their were volunteers from Russia, Bulgaria and Greece), just mercenaries (I do not count them as volunteers since in the late 90s there were Serbs figthing for mercenary groups in Africa).

The wars in the early 90s were one in which Europeans joined for ideological reasons. Those who thought on the Croat side were all from places like England, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Ireland, etc.. (Western states, Catholic and Protestant), while those on the Serb side were all from places like Greece, Romania, Bulgaria & Ukraine (Eastern states, all Orthodox).
